FAIR SHARE HOUSING CENTER APPLAUDS GOVERNOR MURPHY AND THE LEGISLATURE FOR APPROPRIATING $25 MILLION TO REHABILITATE AFFORDABLE HOUSING PROJECTS IMPACTED BY HURRICANE IDA

Yesterday, Governor Murphy signed legislation(S1802)to appropriate $25 million to the New JerseyHousing and Mortgage Finance Agencyto support the rehabilitation of eligibleaffordable housing properties that have been impacted by natural disasters with priority given to properties that suffered damage from Hurricane Ida.In response tothe announcement,Fair Share Housing Centerissued the follow statement.

Adam Gordon, Executive Director, Fair Share Housing Center:

“The $25 million that was announced yesterday is critical to repairing those communities most harmed by Hurricane Ida. These dollars will supplement the federal funding announced last week and will bring relief to the many New Jerseyans who experienced significant damage and displacement from their homes as a result of Hurricane Ida. Access to safe, healthy, and affordable housing is the cornerstone of good health, well-being ,and quality of life. Yet after disasters, when individuals and families experience immeasurable damage to their homes, their bedrock of stability, they are forced to wait too long to be made whole. The disaster relief process frequently exacerbates already existing racial and economic inequities, and in a state like New Jersey, where our racial and economic disparities are significant, ensuring equitable disaster relief must be a priority. We are hopeful that the funding announced today will help provide relief to those communities who need it most. We are committed to ensuring that both the federal and state relief promised will be distributed fairly and equitably in New Jersey.”
