Background/Expertise:

Esmé Devenney is a Senior Staff Attorney at Fair Share Housing Center. Esmé joined Fair Share after receiving the New Jersey Housing Justice Corps Fellowship in 2022. Esmé’s practice is focused on litigating against towns and developers to enforce New Jersey’s Mount Laurel Doctrine. Esmé also contributes to housing policy in New Jersey and was part of the advocacy team that helped pass the most recent amendments to the New Jersey Fair Housing Act, ensuring that New Jersey has one of the strongest frameworks in the United States to require affordable homes in historically exclusionary communities. Esmé also serves as an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Political Science at The College of New Jersey, teaching an undergraduate course on evidence, case strategy, and oral argument as well as coaching TCNJ’s mock trial team.

Prior to joining Fair Share, Esmé interned for the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice and served as a judicial extern to the Honorable Paula Dow, Presiding Judge of the Chancery Division in Burlington County. Esmé also worked in the Rutgers Mortgage Foreclosure and Housing Justice Clinic, representing low-income homeowners facing foreclosure and tenants facing eviction. Esmé holds a J.D. from Rutgers Law School – Camden and B.A. from Fairleigh Dickinson University.
